A word of encouragement to the beginner: do not be intimidated by this! Thousands of pianists have been playing the piano accordingly for many years.......and so can you! Remember, there was a day in the life of each skillful pianist, when he/she was sitting in front of a piano, confronted with the question: where do I start?

The good news is that you can predetermine your own success/failure. Yes, that's right.......and the way to do it is by asking yourself the following questions:

Am I determined to become a skillful play by ear pianist?

Am I prepared to follow the correct procedures in learning to play the piano by ear?

Am I prepared to spend sufficient time practicing?

If your answer is "yes" to all of the above questions, then be assured that your efforts in learning to play the piano will undoubtedly be rewarded!
Even if you answer "no" to only one of the above questions, then I suggest that you do not bother to read any further.

The journey to becoming a skillful "play by ear pianist" requires amongst other things for the pianist to be knowledgeable about piano chords. They are the fuel required by the piano in order to fire on all cylinders.

A pianist should strive from the very beginning to become capable of playing at least 12 different piano chords in each of the twelve pitched keys.

In case you are wondering if this requires the pianist to remember the notes which the different piano chords are compiled of by heart, the answer is a definite: NO! Being familiar with a few simple basic formulas, enables one to construct required piano chords. Remembering the progression of piano chords comes spontaneously with frequent practice.

One should however avoid engaging in learning piano chords prematurely as this often results in a person learning to play only three primary chords of a specific pitched key, never to proceed beyond that point! Hence following the correct procedure in learning to play piano chords is of vital importance.

The extend to which one first familiarizes oneself with the fundamentals, determines the extend of the success with which you will be able to play piano chords by ear.

Familiarizing oneself with the essential  fundamentals requires only a few hours of one's time, after which one can immediately start constructing and playing piano chords without anybody assisting you.
